I’ve been researching Byzantine art, and what I’m finding has surprised me. I remember it being presented quite dismissively when I was studying art history. As though it was a placeholder for the Dark Ages, until the Renaissance finally arrived. The more I look at these works now, the more I think I missed something profoundly good.
